Advent shows us the shortcomings of our culture’s celebration of Christmas. Rather than a false merriment, and escapism, Advent is meant to sober us, to confront the darkness in our world, and cry out to a God who is our only hope. Mary recognized that, and sang a song praising God for answering their prayers and sending the Messiah.
